Lihle Dunjana

Bio

Thembelihle is a youthful and soulful artist from born in Cape Town in one of S.A’s historical townships, Gugulethu. Lihle is a performing musician and has completed her BMUS degree in jazz performance at the university of Cape Town.

Lihle has been playing the piano for about 11 years now and has always been interested in improvisation and its endless possibilities when it comes to creating new music or forms of expression. Improvisation really speaks to a moment and an influence of where one comes from or how one is feeling. She has performed alongside South African artists like Msaki, Mark Fransman and Frank Paco. Lihle has also already performed at the Cape Town Jazz festival and Oslo Jazz festival.

In 2017 Lihle formed a band, “iGugu” alongside her fellow peers who somewhat resonated with the music. The band is a sextet and was created under the yearning of wanting to harness young voices that are slowly impacting the resurgence of live music and jazz in SA, and whom are reshaping the narrative of love, race, and identity amongst the youth of the world today through composition and story -telling within the music and performance.

IGugu pays homage to the streets of the township that have raised an iconic youth that raises questions to the current state of consciousness and awareness, through music and lyricism. The band is a combination of young and fresh instrumentalists and vocalists who are inspired within their own right to move and change the world.

IGugu sound is a mix of African American hard bop style, South African jazz and soul music. It is a unique sound that tells of her experiences and influences such as Mccoy Tyner and Moses Molelekwa. Igugu, is an extension of Lihle Dunjana’s story through the interpretation of her trusted peers. In 2019, IGugu was selected as part of the top 10 for the ESPAfrika young legends competition.

“In my band, I always strive for “openess”, for musicians to be themselves, so we can fully collaborate, when there are no limits or boundaries, there is room for so much creativity and the birth of new things”
