Bio

The American Folklife Center was established in 1976 by the U.S. Congress. Its mission is to preserve and present American folklife using programs of research, documentation, archival preservation, reference service, live performance, exhibitions, publications, and training. It collects and documents living traditional culture and preserves for future generation collections in the preservation facilities of the Library of Congress.

It is one of the largest archives of ethnographic materials from the U.S. and around the world. It contains millions of items of ethnographic and historical documentation recorded from the nineteenth century to the present. The collections include various audiovisual documentations of traditional arts, cultural expressions and oral histories. It offers researchers an access to songs, stories and other creative expressions of people from various communities around the world.

The American Folklife Center offers internships for students to work with the collections for course credit. It offers a number of awards for scholars interested in working with ethnographic collection materials at the Library of Congress.
It is open to members of the public from Monday to Saturday at 08h30am until 17h00pm and for researchers. It is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 17h00 until 21h30pm.
