Letta Mbulu
Bio
Letta Mbulu was born on 23 August 1942 in Soweto, Johannesburg. From a young age she showed musical talent and as a teenager she joined the cast of the musical King Kong, touring within South Africa and abroad. Soon afterwards she left South Africa due to apartheid and went into exile in the United States.
In New York she became part of a community of South African exiles that included several leading artists. She worked with renowned international musicians and performers and established herself as a jazz singer with a sound that blended her African roots with jazz, soul and global influences. Over time she recorded a number of albums while abroad, earning international recognition.
Letta Mbulu’s voice can also be heard on several film and television soundtracks, and she contributed vocals to a well-known international recording. After more than two decades in exile she returned to South Africa in the early 1990s. She and her husband, fellow musician Caiphus Semenya, resumed collaborating and performing on home soil, reintroducing her music to local audiences.
Her career has spanned many decades. She has released a substantial body of work and her music remains influential. She has received multiple honours for her contribution to music, including major lifetime-achievement awards and national recognition.
Into her later years she has continued to perform, to advocate for artistry and cultural heritage, and to mentor younger generations of artists. Her journey as a singer, exile, returnee and legend reflects resilience, passion, and the power of music to transcend adversity.
