Lady Light

Bio

Lady Light is a multi-faceted Independent Artist, Music NFT artist, Mix Dj, and Curator from Lusaka Zambia whose storytelling skills are expressed lyrically, using her voice as a medium for mental empowerment. She is an advocate for African culture and technology in the arts. She has worked with the likes of Muntu Kulcha, Drum Broz, Theresa Ng’ambi and recently collaborated with Mozambican rapper TMRS Awage, and Zimbabwean rappers Mary Jane and Lisa Afonso on “Issue” and the “Women’s Cypher Africa Unite” (organized for Shoko Festival Zimbabwe). Her musical journey has seen her unraveling her creative side and revealing her love for lyricism and percussion. Her lyrics are thoughtful, thought provoking, positive and empowering, reminding listeners to appreciate their culture and to focus on conscious values in order to uplift our existence, especially here in Africa. Her rap style fuses Lozi (her mother tongue) and English lyrics over contemporary African beats, showcasing the diversity of Hip Hop, when expressed from an African point of view.
Lady Light started djing in 2019 after participating in the Rackless Kazi Dj Residency program in 2018 where she learned the art of mixing. This project supports female Dj's from the SADC region, founded by Modzi Arts in partnership with British Council Southern Africa Arts. This project is now currently supported by Music in Africa. Adding Djing to her profile has really helped scale up her career. She roots her style of mixing in the sounds of the Motherland, drawing inspiration from music around the Southern African region, as well as the rest of the continent. Her love for African instruments, percussion and Afro genres is evident in her choice of music creating a sonic experience which evokes our inner urge to move.
In the last 6 years as an emerging artist, performer and Dj, she has graced the stages of festivals and music venues in Zambia including Oktoberfest, Gule 2.0 Festival, Ls Con (Hip Hop performance), Bud X events, Rackless Kazi events, Electro and Afro Souk Sessions at Alliance Francaise Lusaka, as well as Shoko Festival Zimbabwe and Rackless Kazi Zimbabwe. She was part of the Zambian delegation at the Africa Rising Music Conference 2023 where she was a panelist speaking about emerging technologies such as Web3, A.I, V.R etc and how these are shaping the African music landscape. Lady Light is therefore at point in her career where she feels it is necessary to experiment with interdisciplinary fields and integrate these elements into her work. This is one of the reasons she decided to try out block chain technology via music NFT’s. She released her genesis NFT track titled “Ki Nako” on Catalog Works in March 2022. This is the first music NFT coming out of Zambia featuring Zambian traditional folk singer, Theresa Ng’ambi, written by and performed by Lady Light in her native tongue SiLozi. The freedom which comes with this technology is an eye opener, stating that “The decentralized nature of web3 allows me to create music from different perspectives...
