Kwaai Mapensela
Bio
Kwaai Mapensela, whose real name is Mduduzi Khoza, hails from Zola in Soweto, Gauteng – an area renowned for producing some of the legends of kwaito, including Mduduzi Masilela, the late Mandoza, Chiskop, Mapaputsi, Brown Dash, Mshoza, Bricks, Bravo, GP Gangster, Mzambiya and Smokers.
Kwaai began his professional music career in 2002 after being signed by Dalom Music Distribution. He was the founder and lead member of the group Travellers, which comprised three members: himself, his brother Sphiwe Khoza, and their friend Bongane Manana. The group eventually disbanded following a misunderstanding with the label, which brought the contract to an end.
Despite this setback, Kwaai continued to pursue his music career. In 2016, he decided to go solo and released his debut album Dlala Kwaai. Interestingly, the album had originally been intended for another artist who failed to come to the studio, leading Kwaai to record and keep the project himself. The album was produced by Bheki Mkhwanazi at MBM Studios and released under his own company, M79 Entertainment. However, the project did not achieve commercial success due to limited marketing.
Determined to grow, Kwaai invested time in learning more about the industry. His research led him to connect with Loftus Khoza, Tronix Madibe and Techno P, whose guidance played a significant role in strengthening his skills and understanding of the music business.
In 2022, he released his first official single, Insimbi Yabelungu, featuring Nezi and produced by Loftus Khoza. The track performed well on digital platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. In 2023, he collaborated with Techno P on his third single, Dalas Groover, featuring GTZ from Chiskop and Dimizeer.
Kwaai now operates under his own brand, Kwaai Mapensela, and has built a wealth of experience through the challenges and achievements of his musical journey.
