Kulamba

Bio

Kulamba is a Chewa cultural ceremony held each year at Mkaika in the Katete District in Zambia. At the ceremony, all the subordinate chiefs in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia pay their homage or tributes to the paramount chief, Kalonga Gawa Undi. The chiefs also attend and celebrate at this great function with people from their respective areas.

The Chewa chiefs from the three countries present their gifts to Kalonga, the head chief. The chiefs also reported their concerns from their respective areas. In this year’s ceremony, the Chewa head Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi advises Chewa people from Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique to live in harmony with other tribes and the presence of various chiefs invited from other tribes is an example of the Undi’s message. The ceremony includes entertainment – various cultural dances from Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.
