Kondi Band

Bio

Kondi Band is an Afro-electronic collaboration that fuses traditional Sierra Leonean folk music with modern dancefloor production. The group primarily comprises of:

  • Sorie Kondi: A blind singer and master of the kondi (a custom-made 15-pin thumb piano) from Freetown, Sierra Leone.
  • Chief Boima: An American-born DJ and producer with Sierra Leonean roots, known for blending global electronic styles.
  • Will Horrocks: A London-based producer (one half of the duo LV) who joined to further refine their signature sound.
  • We Famous | In Conversation With Chief Boima of Kondi Band
  • Belle Wahallah | The Kondi Band

Musical Style and Background:

The band's sound is characterized by the hypnotic, acoustic lines of the kondi thumb piano layered over heavy basslines, funk, and techno-inspired beats. Their debut album, Salone (2017), gained critical acclaim for bridging generations and continents, while their sophomore release, We Famous (2021), expanded their sound with guest features and more intricate production.

Sorie Kondi's personal history adds a layer of resilience to the music; having lost his early recordings during the Sierra Leonean Civil War, he spent years busking on the streets of Freetown before his chance collaboration with Chief Boima brought his music to a global audience.

Discography and Notable Tracks:

  • Albums: Salone (2017) and We Famous (2021).
  • Notable Singles: "Yeanoh (Powe Handa Blingabe)", "Titi Dem Too Service", and "She Doesn't Love You" (featuring Mariama).
  • Latest Work: In 2024, they released the Money Face EP, which includes remixes and a title track addressing the unauthorised use of Sorie Kondi’s likeness on Sierra Leonean currency.
