Kgomotso le Roux

Bio

Kgomotso le Roux is an entrepreneur, singer, mbira player and songwriter from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Her love for music began in primary school where she would mimic Mariah Carey. This led her to winning singing competitions in Durban, Kwa Mashu and in Johannesburg.

As soon as she learned to write, she started writing hip hop songs and practiced melodies that would naturally come to her mind. Her father Motsumi Makhene taught her to play the piano at 11 years old and encouraged her to join music and dance lessons at the Funda Community College.

She pursued music after high school and later received a Grade 3 music theory certificate in piano and drumming from Funda. Kgomotso later enrolled at Wits University where she further developed her technical ability in composition, mbira performance, voice and digital music technology. She graduated from Wits with a Bmus degree in Ethnomusicology in 2008.

After university, she worked as an archive assistant then as a general administrator at the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). Kgomotso resigned at SAMRO and became the director of IKS Consulting & Promotions where she worked as a booking agent, music producer and managed international research projects for seven years.

In 2013 she produced music for Takalani Sesame where she co-produced 40 songs in collaboration with Blondie Makhene, Yonela Mnana and Tlale Makhene. She also co-produced a documentary for Wastebuster, a UK based NGO and enjoyed working with prominent artists such as Tresor, Ifani, RJ Benjamin, Kelly Khumalo, Vusi Nova and Theo Nhlengethwa.

In 2017, she launched her debut album, Unoyiwawa that is part of a program aimed at benefitting 7000 South African crafters. In 2018 she graduated from the University of Cape Town with an Advanced Diploma in Business Project Management.

She loves to serve people and is passionate about managing sustainable development projects in the arts.
