Joel Lwaga
Bio
Joel Lwaga is a Tanzanian gospel minister, songwriter, and recording artist whose music has become a cornerstone of contemporary worship culture in East Africa. Born and raised in Dar es Salaam in a deeply Christian household, Joel grew up immersed in faith, music, and church life. His parents, both pastors, nurtured an environment where worship and spiritual reflection were integral to daily life, shaping his calling from a young age.
Joel’s musical journey began in church choirs during childhood, where his exceptional vocal ability quickly stood out. He later joined prominent praise and worship collectives such as Next Level and Glorious Worship Team, spaces that allowed him to refine his sound and spiritual discipline. Coming from a musically inclined family — with siblings involved in production and instrumentation — Joel developed a strong foundation as both a singer and a skilled piano player.
Although academically accomplished, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and receiving opportunities to pursue postgraduate studies abroad, Joel made a decisive commitment to music and ministry. His artistic direction is guided by what he describes as lived encounters with God, translating personal testimonies into songs that centre hope, faith, truth, and transformation.
Joel Lwaga released his debut song “Unaweza” in 2016, but it was “Sitabaki Nilivyo” that marked a turning point in his career. Written during a period of personal struggle and uncertainty, the song resonated deeply with audiences across the region, becoming a viral anthem of perseverance and spiritual renewal. Its success established Joel as a defining voice in modern Tanzanian gospel music.
He went on to release several impactful projects, including albums such as “Ananipenda,” “Mimi Ni Wa Juu,” and “Umejua Kunifurahisha,” alongside EPs like “Trust” and later works including “Good To Go” (2023) and “Wapi” (2024). His music consistently blends praise and worship with contemporary gospel production, creating worship experiences that extend beyond performance into ministry.
Beyond recording, Joel Lwaga is an active preacher, ministering across Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and Australia. He views musicians as preachers whose sermons are carried through melody and lyric. His contributions to gospel music have been recognised with awards such as East Africa Male Artist of the Year (2019) and Maranatha Global Worship Music Awards – Best Petition Song.
Today, Joel Lwaga stands as one of East Africa’s most influential gospel artists — a musician whose work continues to inspire healing, faith, and spiritual growth across generations.
