Joburg Theatre

Bio

Located in the cultural district of Braamfontein, Joburg Theatre is one of South Africa’s leading performing arts venues and a key hub for theatre, music, and dance productions. The venue opened in 1962 as the Johannesburg Civic Theatre and was later renamed Joburg Theatre in 2009 as part of the city’s efforts to rebrand and modernise its cultural institutions.

The complex comprises several performance spaces, including the Mandela Theatre, the Lesedi Theatre, and the Space.com Theatre, which together host a wide range of productions, including musicals, plays, comedy shows, concerts, ballet, and educational programmes. Over the years, the venue has hosted both local and international productions, making it an important platform for performing arts in South Africa.

With seating capacities ranging from intimate theatre settings to large-scale auditoriums, Joburg Theatre plays a significant role in Johannesburg’s cultural landscape and regularly collaborates with artists, production companies, and cultural organisations to present diverse programming throughout the year
