Led by the talented guitarist and singer, James Mlanda, this band has earned widespread acclaim for their fusion of traditional and modern sounds.
James Mlanda's journey in music began in the picturesque village of Mbesa in Tunduru District, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania, where he was born into the renowned Ngoni tribe. Growing up, he was deeply influenced by the musical legacy of his father, who would serenade the congregation at church and participate in traditional ceremonies using the indigenous languages of Ngoni and Yao. These early experiences ignited a profound passion within James to explore and preserve his cultural heritage through music.
In pursuit of his musical aspirations, James Mlanda embarked on a transformative journey. His creative vision led him to blend the authenticity of indigenous languages with modern sounds, forging a distinctive style that reverberates with the essence of Tanzania. His compositions delve into the country's rich tapestry, celebrating everyday life, the significance of traditions, and the delicate interplay between traditional values and the ever-changing globalized world.
In 2014, after an inspiring studio season, James gathered like-minded musicians to form a band that would serve as a vessel for his musical expression. Thus, GITAFRIKA was born, a name derived from the Swahili words “jinong'ite Afrika” which is shortened to “Gitafrika” and loosely translates to mean something nice and fun in Africa. The band's very name reflects the essence of their performances - a sweet and fun-filled celebration of African culture.
GITAFRIKA BAND's signature sound revolves around high-energy percussion and captivating compositions that bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary music. Their performances have captivated audiences at esteemed venues such as the Bagamoyo Festival, Poapoa Restaurant, Jamafest 2017 in Kampala, Uganda, Nafasi Artspace, The Beat Festival, and numerous official events.
Recognizing the band's exceptional talent and cultural contributions, GITAFRIKA BAND was officially registered with the National Arts Council, solidifying their place as cultural ambassadors of Tanzania's musical heritage.
As the driving force behind GITAFRIKA BAND, James Mlanda continues to inspire and uplift audiences with his soulful vocals, masterful guitar skills, and unwavering commitment to preserving the beauty of East African traditions.
