Izingane Zoma is a Maskandi group from Nquthu in KwaZulu-Natal. The group was formed in 1993 and became known for its strong lyrical commentary, traditional instrumentation and a distinctive vocal style. From the beginning they stood out for foregrounding powerful female voices in a genre that has historically been dominated by men.
The group was founded by producer and bandleader Shobeni Khuzwayo together with his brother Busani Khuzwayo. Over the years the line-up has included vocalists such as Thandoluni Phungula, Tholakele Ngobese and the late Bongekile Ngobese. Although the membership has changed across decades, the core identity and sound of the group have remained consistent.
Izingane Zoma’s music often addresses social and political issues affecting both rural and urban communities. Their songs comment on leadership, inequality, daily struggles and cultural identity. Among their well-known songs are “Msholozi” and “uMalema”, which gained significant national attention. Several of their albums have achieved gold and platinum status, confirming their popularity and broad appeal.
Their sound is rooted in traditional Maskandi elements, featuring guitar, concertina, percussion and tight vocal harmonies. At the same time the group has embraced contemporary influences and adapted to changing audiences, ensuring ongoing relevance in South Africa’s evolving musical landscape.
Three decades after their formation, Izingane Zoma remains one of the most influential Maskandi groups in the country.
