Molefi Ishmael Morabe: SA Hip-Hop’s Comeback Story With Serious Staying Power
Molefi Ishmael Morabe has been shaping South Africa’s urban sound since the early days of Prophets of Da City, where he helped power the politically charged Age of Truth era. Raised in Rustenburg and sharpened in Hillbrow, his rise took him from early rap activism to mainstream hits like “Roba Li Theka,” proving his versatility across hip-hop, kwaito and R&B.
He later reinvented himself as part of Jozi, the group that blended genres into the high-energy Motherland Crunk wave that defined a new youth culture moment. Offstage, Morabe has been open about personal struggles and the emotional impact of losing his partner, American singer Puff Johnson — a period that reshaped his life and career.
His return to music has been marked by fresh creativity, from the nostalgic 2019 single “Takalani (Ever Since)” to a 2023 amapiano collaboration with Tublaq. Decades in, Morabe remains one of SA music’s most resilient and quietly influential voices.
