Hiari ya Moyo Cultural Troup

Bio

Hiari ya Moyo Cultural Troup is a unique Nyamwezi tribal cultural dance group, with original cultural identity that is connected to Africa, that is lead by Shabani Komba. Hiari ya moyo (Mwinamila) Group was established in 1953 in Tabora region, of the Republic of Tanzania, by cultural music legendary Salehe Ramadhani Mwinamila. Currently, the group’s head-quarter is Dodoma region and has a total of 20 artists – six females and 14 males artists. The name Hiari ya Moyo is originated from the Swahili words meaning “heart wish” which is also the name of the type of traditional dance for Nyamwezi tribe.

Hiari ya Moyo Cultural Troup is famously being termed as an informal university of traditional music and dance. Apparently the group system of training, from a practical perspective, surpasses by far the modern system of college training where most of the student's time is taken by theory classes.

The group has been successful in spearheading the struggle for independence between 1950 and 1961, and has helped many cultural heritage aspirants to learn and practice traditional music within the country and beyond; and has been actively mobilizing for social change including conducting mass educational campaign through cultural music.
