The Grow to Black Collective is an improvisatory, live jazz ensemble by Laone Thekiso (composer, pianist), drummer Dylan Lebekwe, bassist Menzi Macala, tenor saxophonist, Leatile Tev Serojane, and trumpeter Njaveva Bingana. Fusing Jazz with aspects of other musical styles, the collective’s goal: to lead you through an unforgettable sonic journey, built on structure, realized by improvisation. Notable appearances by the band include performances at International Jazz day, the Maitisong Festival in Gaborone, and collaborative demonstrations for the President of Switzerland. Their recently released debut album, “The Nexus Suite vol. 1” contains a diversity of tunes. The title tune contains musical elements which recur in other tunes. It is a “nexus”: a connecting point between all the elements of the record. Co-founding DJ and engineer Maleho “Lex” Makgothi describes the G2B experience as “classical music in form, but with a lot of improvisation. ” The music is a collection of vast, exploratory, musical canvases which flow through Afro-jazz, contemporary neo-soul, and cool jazz. G2BC’s second offering features bassist Mike Mokgatitshwane, trumpeter Njaveva “NJ” Bingana, drummer Dylan Lebekwe, and
pianist/composer Laone Thekiso.
