Bio
Gallo Music is the oldest independent record company in Africa, founded in 1926 in Johannesburg by Eric Gallo. The company has played a central role in the development of the South African recording industry, evolving from a retail record store into a major music company involved in recording, manufacturing, distribution and rights management.
In its early years, Gallo expanded beyond retail into record production and established recording facilities that enabled the documentation of local music at scale. By the 1930s, the company was recording a wide range of South African musical forms, contributing to the preservation and commercialisation of local music during a period of growing urbanisation and industrialisation.
Gallo became a dominant force in the domestic market through its control of recording, pressing and distribution infrastructure. It was also associated with a number of key imprints and partnerships that helped circulate African music both locally and internationally. Over time, the company built a catalogue that spans multiple decades and formats, including shellac records, vinyl, cassette and compact disc.
Gallo Music has worked with and distributed recordings by a number of prominent South African artists, including Miriam Makeba, Lucky Dube, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Thandiswa Mazwai and Caiphus Semenya. Its catalogue includes genres such as jazz, gospel, traditional music, mbaqanga and contemporary popular music, reflecting the diversity of South Africa’s soundscape.
During the apartheid era, Gallo operated within a complex and unequal industry structure, but its recordings nonetheless provide an important archive of Black South African musical expression. Many recordings from this period have since become historically significant, offering insight into cultural life under segregation and the evolution of popular music in urban centres.
In the democratic era, Gallo Music has undergone structural changes in line with broader shifts in the media and entertainment sectors. The company became part of Avusa Limited, which was later restructured into Times Media Group (now Arena Holdings). This positioned Gallo within a larger media organisation with interests in publishing, broadcasting and digital media.
In recent years, Gallo Music has focused on the digitisation and licensing of its catalogue, making historic recordings accessible on global streaming platforms. Its operations include music publishing and rights management, supporting the use of its catalogue in film, television and other media.
Today, Gallo Music remains an active participant in South Africa’s music industry. Its extensive archive, built over nearly a century, is widely recognised as an important repository of African recorded music, contributing to both cultural preservation and the continued circulation of the continent’s musical heritage.
