DJ Sbu
Bio
DJ Sbu (Sibusiso Leope), born 28 May 1987, is a South African DJ, producer, radio presenter, author, and businessman. He was born in Tembisa in South Africa, but later relocated to Pretoria.
His media career began in 1998 when he started working at a radio station in his hometown. After two years, he made the jump to a major station when he joined YFM. In 2005, he began his music and entrepreneurial journey when he started his own record label called TS Records, where he signed notable artists such as the late Zahara. The following year, he released his debut single, “Remember When It Rained”, which is still widely considered to be his best song. He leveraged his popularity through radio to help him become one of the biggest South African house artists in the early 2000’s.
Some of his other ventures include being a published author, a philanthropist, and, most recently, the founder of MoFaya, a proudly South African energy drink company. He launched his company in 2014 and has been very active in promoting the energy drink. His company was the centre of controversy when he decided to promote his drink while hosting the 2015 Metro FM Awards. This decision resulted in him being fired from Metro. However, he has since gone on to work for other stations.
DJ Sbu is also known for his ‘alter ego’ musical identity called Mzekezeke, a comedic yet entertaining Kwaito star during the early 2000’s. The identity of his alter ego was widely considered a secret for many years and has still never been officially revealed. However, rumour and speculation provide a compelling argument that DJ Sbu was indeed under the mask.
