DJ Okapi

Bio

Digging up rare vinyl grooves from basements in downtown Jozi, DJ Okapi brings a forgotten era of South African pop music back to life - the synth-fuelled disco-funk known as bubblegum that was the soundtrack to the turbulent 1980s. DJ Okapi pays tribute to the era's forgotten heroes and joins the dots to their contemporaries in other parts of Africa and its diaspora.

Over the past 10 years DJ Okapi has honed his selection into a unique Afrocentric experience, one for lovers of true soul music. Residencies have included Vinyl Thursdays at Kitcheners in Johannesburg, House of Nsako (2010) and Marvel in Cape Town. Other highlights include gigs at Yaam in Berlin (2009), Azgo in Maputo (2014) and Bushfire in Swaziland (2015). In a scene dominated by house music and laptop DJs, Okapi's timeless, inimitable and relentlessly funky vinyl selection comes as a breath of fresh air.
