Dena Mwana (born Denise Mwanakitata Muwayi on December 27, 1986) is a globally recognized Congolese gospel singer, songwriter, and worship leader. Renowned for her distinctive vocal style and deep spiritual conviction, she has become one of the most influential voices in African and Francophone gospel music.

Early Life and Background

Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Dena Mwana is the sixth of eight children. Raised in a musically inclined household, she was greatly influenced by her father, a psychology professor and music enthusiast who introduced his children to both traditional African folk music and contemporary sounds of the 1980s.

Her ministry began at an early age. At just 13 years old, she joined the “Notre Dame de Grâce” church choir, and by the age of 18, she had become its musical director—demonstrating early leadership and musical excellence.

Musical Career

Dena Mwana’s professional career gained significant momentum in 2011. Her musical style blends African rhythms with contemporary gospel influences, drawing inspiration from internationally acclaimed artists such as CeCe Winans and Sinach.

  • 2004: Founded her first group, the Acappela Thematic Musical Group.

  • 2006: Relocated to Virginia, United States, for a period of time.

  • 2011: Released her debut album Hosanna, featuring the widely celebrated single “Roho Yangu.”

  • 2016: Released her second album Monene, which strengthened her international presence with songs such as “Emmanuel” and “Souffle.”

  • 2020/2021: Released the highly successful album Souffle, featuring collaborations with the Soweto Gospel Choir and CalledOut Music.

  • 2023: Made history with a landmark concert at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, drawing a massive audience and reinforcing her status as a leading gospel artist in Africa.
