David Segal

David studied at The Institute of Sound Recording in San Diego, California USA. He began his music career working as in-house recording engineer for RPM studios in Johannesburg. In 1983 David joined up with the late Lucky Dube to be the recording and live Front of House sound engineer for the next 24 years. David’s major focus was setting up all necessary sound and music equipment at all international live shows and making sure each concert sounded perfect. Travelling the world with Lucky Dube often meant working together with high profile musicians from across the globe. David joined Gallo Record Co. as ‘In-house recording Engineer’ and later becoming Gallo A & R Manager until 1995.

David decided to leave Gallo as his touring schedule with Lucky Dube worldwide had become top priority. David now owns and operates Forest Studios, a company he started up with award-winning sound engineer Peter Pearlson in Johannesburg over 12 years ago. Forest Studios specializes in audio mixing, mastering and DVD Surround Sound. David does live sound for many top recording artists including Stimela, Malaika, Simphiwe Dana, Jaziel Brothers, Thandiswa Mazwai, Rebecca Malope, Asande Bam and also worked with the late Lebo Mathosa. Some of the platinum selling albums David has engineered and co- produced include artists: Stimela, Lucky Dube, Sipho Mabuse, Splash, Dalom Kids, Patricia Majalisa, Rebecca Malope, Coyote, Steve Kekana, Soul Brothers, Benjamin Dube, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Thandiswa Mazwai,Phuze Khemisi and more. David assisted Trevor Horn (Seal’s producer) while he was in SA with Malcolm Maclaren and also mixed The Manhattans and Rodriguez live in concert recordings at the Standard Bank Arena. He assisted with the live recording of Toto also at the Standard Bank Arena.

David has recently toured as Front of House engineer for Eddy Grant and Australian artist Xavier Rudd to multiple international cities. David has long been considered one of the most capable and talented sound engineers in South Africa and has won and been nominated for numerous high profile awards. Due to David’s extensive experience in the music industry, he is ideally qualified for audio mixing, mastering and live sound events of all magnitude.
