The Dark City Sisters
Bio
The Dark City Sisters were a South African female vocal group formed in 1958. Their name was derived from the colloquial nickname for Alexandra, a township in Johannesburg that was once known as the “dark city” because it lacked street lighting at night.
The group was formed by Rupert Bopape, who worked as a talent scout at EMI. The original lineup included Joyce Mogatusi, Francisca Mngomezulu, Irene Mawela, Hilda Mogapi, Kate Olene, and Esther Khoza.
Through their rich vocal harmonies and distinctive sound, the group played an important role in shaping the Mbaqangastyle. Their influence on the genre was further extended when members Joyce Mogatusi and Francisca Mngomezulu left the group to join the Mahotella Queens. Alongside Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, the Mahotella Queens helped popularise mbaqanga internationally through extensive global performances.
The Dark City Sisters released several albums throughout their career. Their catalogue includes Star Time (1962), Star Time Volume 2 (1966), Star Time Volume 3 (1967), and Star Time Volume 4 (1968). Later releases include Phutatswana(1976) and Vukani (1994).
