Contemporary African Music & Arts Archive (CAMA)

Bio

Established in 1995, Contemporary African Music & Arts Archive (CAMA) is a multi-media initiative for African arts and culture. It is based at the Montebello Design Centre, University of Cape Town in South Africa. It focuses on documenting audio-visual materials about the lives and work of artists, musicians and other individuals involved in cultural activities in Africa.

CAMA developed a computer-based "context" focussing on African music, art and ethnography. This to date developed one of the largest initiatives called the Culture Africa Network Project (CAN).

CAN was funded by the Ford Foundation and has enabled CAMA to establish documentary centres in seven African countries. Such countries include Mali, Ghana, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa. The aim of the project is to facilitate the local gathering and sharing of digital documentary resources for education, research and the promotion of Africa's artistic heritage. The digital resources that are developed through this initiative are intended for both the archival preservation of African cultural artefacts in their host countries and to be shared between other educational and cultural institutions around the continent.
