CAFCA Music Ensemble
Bio
Committed Artists for Cultural Advancement (CAFCA) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2000 by musicians around Pretoria under the leadership of Jesse Mogale. Its mission is to provide quality music education to disadvantaged youth, primarily in the township of Mamelodi and other areas including Queenstown, Welkom, and Potchefstroom.
CAFCA was born out of a need to restore music education in townships neglected during apartheid. A key partnership with the VAK music school in Delft (Netherlands), supported by the Mamelodi-Delft Platform, helped launch the initiative through instrument donations, teacher training, and financial support. The project began offering lessons at Bohlabatsatsi Primary School and SOS Children’s Village in 2003, starting with 45 students and four teachers.
CAFCA focuses on children and youth aged 7–22, offering instruction in music theory, individual practical lessons, and ensemble performance. Skilled tutors volunteer their time, using the UNISA syllabus and enrolling students in formal exams. Public concerts and outreach programs are central to student development, building confidence and performance experience.
Since its inception, CAFCA has trained over 1,370 children and worked with 67 teachers and clinicians. Workshops with renowned musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard, and Rufus Reid have added value to the program. Notably, 25 students have pursued higher education, with several excelling professionally, including performances with the MIAGI Youth Orchestra and collaborations with legendary South African musicians like Sibongile Khumalo and Abdullah Ibrahim.
CAFCA continues to grow as a vital force in nurturing musical talent and fostering positive change through the arts in South African communities.
