Black Coffee Foundation
Bio
The Black Coffee Foundation was established by internationally renowned South African DJ and producer Black Coffee (born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo). The foundation launched in 2010, at an event held at Maponya Mall where Black Coffee performed an endurance-set of 60 hours to mark its debut. His roots in Mthatha and his own journey in the music industry deeply inform the foundation’s direction and purpose.
Mission: The Black Coffee Foundation’s mission is to support nation-building and community rehabilitation in South Africa by raising funds (via CD sales, private and public sector donations, and international investors) to assist vulnerable and marginalised people.
Vision: The Foundation is committed to uplifting destitute and differently-abled South Africans, by identifying their needs and offering sustainable support that advances education, independence and social integration.
Since its inception, the Black Coffee Foundation has executed a number of impactful programmes:
-
Food-Bank Initiative (Mthatha): The Foundation launched a food-bank project focused on rural areas—especially Mthatha, the founder’s home region—providing food parcels to 100 + families in its early rollout.
-
Back-to-School Campaigns: In KwaZulu-Natal and other regions, the Foundation has run back-to-school drives supplying school-uniforms and educational support to learners in need.
-
Partnerships for Community Support: A notable collaboration with Mercedes‑Benz South Africa bolstered efforts to make the Foundation’s programmes more sustainable, including a school-uniform campaign in KZN and food-bank operations.
-
Fundraising for Music Education: In March 2025, the Foundation hosted a gala dinner in Johannesburg, raising around R3.1 million to kick-start the development of the Black Coffee Music Academy—a tertiary-level institution aimed at young musicians.
-
Support for Entrepreneurship and Local Talent: The Foundation’s charity concert in 2024 spotlighted local SMMEs (small, micro and medium enterprises) in the culinary sector, providing exposure and business development opportunities.
This foundation occupies a unique space in South Africa: it combines the cultural influence of a global-renowned artist with grounded social-impact programming. By focusing both on basic human needs (food security, schooling) and longer-term capacity building (music education, entrepreneurship), it aims for a dual-impact model: immediate relief + sustainable empowerment. Its ties to both rural and under-resourced communities further amplify its relevance.
