BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness)
Bio
BCUC is a live music-performing band from Soweto, South Africa. Our music is informed by rebellious, spiritual and ritualistic music. It derives from a mix of genres across the ages. Our sound is a blend of traditional music from our different cultures, to the blues, funk, punk, kwaito and hip hop. We call it Afro- psychedelic! Africa Ngungungu!
The seven piece band is made up of, Jovi (lead singer, percussions), Kgomotso (backing vocals, percussions), Hloni (raps, ad libs, percussions), Luja (raps, backing vocals, marching drum), Cheex (congas), Skhumbuzo (bass drum) and Mosebetsi on the bass guitar.
Since 2003 we wanted to be a band that would change the way people think about music from Africa. Singing songs of Africa that is rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs. The journey has taken us to stages large and small across the globe, taking it one transcendental show at a time.
From 2016 we have released a trilogy of albums, Our Truth (2016), Emakhosini (2018) and The Healing (2019), capturing the power of our live show with its ebbs and flows, free forming song cycles and all three have gained critical acclaim internationally. With The Healing came dream collaborations with legendary Nigerian saxophonist Femi Kuti and American poet Saul Williams.
