Bala Brothers: Three Voices from the Eastern Cape Taking South African Music Global
From Kwa Nobuhle Township outside Gqeberha to international stages, the Bala Brothers have become one of South Africa’s most celebrated vocal acts, blending classical, gospel, soul and African music into a powerful, contemporary sound.
The trio, made up of brothers Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo Bala, first made headlines when Zwai became the first black member of the previously segregated Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School in 1988, a breakthrough that opened doors for a new generation of classical musicians.
Zwai later joined kwaito supergroup TKZee and earned a Grammy nomination in 2011 for his production work on the Soweto Gospel Choir’s Grace, while performing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Loyiso built a successful gospel and inspirational music career, winning multiple South African Music Awards and becoming a UNAids National Goodwill Ambassador in 2013. Phelo, the youngest, joined Joyous Celebration in 2011, released a solo album and embraced his calling as a sangoma in 2014.
As a group, the Bala Brothers launched B3 in 2006, followed by Live at Emperors Palace in 2013, and performed at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service later that year. Their global breakthrough came in 2015 with Bala Brothers (Live) on Warner Classics, which reached the Billboard World Music Charts and was broadcast worldwide through a PBS television special.
Today, the Bala Brothers stand as a symbol of South African musical excellence, carrying a story of heritage, faith and global impact from the Eastern Cape to the world.
