Archive of Contemporary Music (ARC)

Bio

Founded in 1985 by B. George and David Wheeler, Archive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is a music library and research center located in New York City, U.S. The archive is currently maintained by Senior Archivist Fred Patterson.

ARC collects preserves and provides information on the popular music of all cultures and races throughout the world from 1950 to the present.

It owes its collection to hundreds of record companies, publishers, distributors, collectors, artists and music fans from around the world who donate new materials. It has electronically catalogued more than 300,000 sound recordings and three million pieces of attendant support material including photographs, videos, DVDs, books, magazines, press kits, sheet music, ephemera and memorabilia. Its music instrument catalogue is an online version of ARC’s database with more than 3 776 instruments common to popular music from Africa, Asia and other continents.
ARC is currently for research purposes, but its goal is to allow students, educators, historians, musicians, authors, journalists, and the general public to access the archive’s rich musical heritage. In early 2009, ARC went into a partnership with Columbia University.

It is open to researchers by appointment from Monday to Friday at 10h00am until 18h00pm.
