Bio
Amandla Akhona is a dynamic musician, instrumentalist, and cultural worker devoted to preserving and reimagining indigenous music, history, and knowledge systems. Deeply rooted in isiXhosa musical heritage, she brings a rare blend of technical mastery and cultural authenticity to every performance.
As one half of the experimental duo Banned from the Land, Amandla has performed at some of Johannesburg’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including Arts Alive, captivating audiences with her evocative compositions and powerful stage presence.
In September 2025, Amandla embarks on her debut tour, Izithole, a long-awaited showcase of music she has been developing over the past six years. Both a custodian and innovator, her work not only celebrates traditional music but pushes its boundaries—contributing meaningfully to cultural preservation through artistic excellence.
While she is yet to release a solo body of work, her distinctive voice and musicianship feature on acclaimed studio reordings such as Umthombo by Xhanti Nokwali, Sizangengoma by Izanusi, and Umhlaba Ophezulu by IVA Collective.
