Afrikalt
Bio
**Afrikalt** is an innovative, alternative music movement founded by Andrew Veldman and Damian Strydom, dedicated to championing Afrikaans music beyond the traditional boundaries. Established with a mission to redefine and expand the Afrikaans music scene, Afrikalt showcases diverse, homegrown talent that spans genres like surf rock, psychedelic punk, acoustic soul, electronic rap, and more.
Afrikalt's lineup includes bands and artists with unique styles and messages. From The Karriers, an Afrikaans surf rock band from Cape Town, to Kattewaad, a bluesy rock-and-roll duo, Afrikalt provides a platform for fresh and fearless voices. Dierbaar, the recent winner of Taalgenoot ATKV’s Ruk en Rym competition, adds a Melktert Komisie-inspired but distinctly new sound, while Die Fakboiz bring an energetic, heavy 'doef doef' vibe. Kraaines, a boere punk band, infuses psychedelic elements, and artists like Mieke and Sewevoet captivate audiences with more introspective, acoustic performances.
Through its "Rou en Rustig" YouTube series, Afrikalt spotlights stripped-down, soulful renditions by artists like Robert Bolton and Hugo Veldsman. The organization actively supports emerging talent, creating festival lineups such as Afrikalt Music Festival and planning innovative tours like their upcoming December tour mini-festival. Afrikalt is on a mission to shake up the Afrikaans music landscape, merging tradition with modernity and a bold, alternative spirit.
