Bio

Located on the fifth floor of University Library South -5039, African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (ADSMM) is an archiving, research and performance program in California, U.S. ADSMM forms part of the California State University Dominguez Hills Music Department. The program was implemented in partnership with the university’s library and African Studies Department. It includes the Georgia and Nolan Payton Archive of Sacred Music, the Dominguez Hills Jubilee Choir and the African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians Network and Forum. It presents an African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians Performance Program as part of the Annual Living Legends Festival.

During the 20th century, Los Angeles has been one of many destinations of African Diaspora musicians. This includes composers, performers, teachers and scholars that have travelled to different paths of the world to visit or to permanently reside in Los Angeles. The flow of such musicians has had a significant impact on both the secular and the sacred musical life of the city. The main focus of the ADSMM Program is to collect, preserve through archival acquisition and contemporary performance and conduct researches on the life and work of African Diaspora musicians. The collection of oral histories is of importance to the work of the ADSMM program and strongly emphasizes the preservation of the religious music.

Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals with relevant experience and skills while preference is given to supporters of the Georgia and Nolan Payton Archive. The ADSMM Program and the Georgia & Nolan Payton Archive provides an opportunity for students to earn credit for their studies by engaging in oral history interviews and to work with the program’s collections. The ADSMM program has also established a community service program aimed at giving to the organizations and churches of the community.
