Abaphuthumi
Bio
Abaphuthumi is a South African music collective founded in 2006 by Mr Mphuthumi Khumalo, a gifted artist from a rural village in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape.
Mission
The group is dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and uplifting audiences through umculo wakwa-ntu (African indigenous music), with a strong emphasis on preserving and celebrating cultural heritage through sound.
About the Founder
Mr Khumalo serves as the group’s leader, composer, vocalist, and dancer. With a deep understanding of the music industry, he is recognised for his commanding stage presence and emotionally resonant performances.
From an early age, he drew inspiration from renowned Maskandi artists such as Mfaz’omyama, Migqumeni, and Gcwesa. Their influence has been instrumental in shaping both his artistic identity and musical direction.
Musical Style
Abaphuthumi’s sound is rooted in:
- Maskandi
- Gospel Maskandi
- KwaBhaca traditional music
Their music celebrates Xhosa heritage, culture, and storytelling, creating a powerful emotional connection with audiences while honouring indigenous traditions.
Industry Contribution
In collaboration with notable artists including Nomanikiniki and Bahluphile, Mr Khumalo played a key role in initiating a unifying movement for artists from the Eastern Cape. This led to the creation of Amaqhawe Akwabhaca, a cultural album project dedicated to preserving and celebrating the traditions, identity, and legacy of AmaXhosa heritage.
Management
Abaphuthumi is represented by PMC Artists Management, an entertainment company offering public relations and marketing services across a range of artistic disciplines.
