MoAfrika wa Mokgathi

About

MoAfrika wa Mokgathi (born Muriel Mokgathi-Mvubu) is a musician, producer, poet, author, curator, cultural activist and award winning radio presenter from Mamelodi, South Africa.

She is the co-founder of an NGO called Hear My Voice. MoAfrika wa Mokgathi is also a non-executive director and board member of the Association of independent Record Companies.

Her career in the arts began in 1999. She credits her uncle and grandfather for playing a pivotal role in her writing style and for employing code mixing of English and Sepedi in her art. In 2019, she launched her poetry collection titled My Tongue is a Rainbow in Washington, as part of the Azania to DC Poetry tour and cultural exchange. The collection explores race, equality, inequality, women and children abuse and marginalised languages.

In 2020, MoAfrika wa Mokgathi won the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africa Alumni for her contribution in the arts and entertainment sectors.

In 2021, she headlined festivals and literary events in South Africa, China, the US and Sweden. Some of her works have been featured on local radio stations like SAfm, Kaya FM, Ubuntu Radio and Channel Afrika as well as TV shows including Trendz and The Morning Show.

As of 2021, MoAfrika wa Mokgathi was working on a music and poetry commissioned double album.
