Lesedi Show Choir

Bio

Lesedi Show Choir (LSC), a mixed choir with a very powerful singing and dancing style, has its home in Ratanda in Heidelberg, near Johannesburg. Due to a Charter of Friendship with Heidelberg in Germany, the choir frequently goes on concert tours to Germany and other European countries.

Thabang Mokoena, co-founder, conductor and choreographer of LSC, is a leader with extraordinary interpersonal and intercultural skills. He attracts the most talented young people in his home township Ratanda (Gauteng). They sing, dance and drum in a spirit of togetherness. For them, Thabang is a role-model showing them a positive way to life through music. Mokoena collects traditional songs, dances and rhythms, re-arranges them and develops new choreography. The Lesedis express themselves in a unique way, their repertoire reflects African life in its fullness expressed in gospels and spirituals, songs about daily life and love songs. Some of the songs are from Johnny Clegg and LSC's style is certainly influenced by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. All songs are accompanied by their own choreography and performed in a spirit of togetherness. The dance repertoire ranges from traditional Zulu, Tswana and Basotho to Gumboot and Modern Dance.

In 2013, eight members of LSC were part of the Pan-African project "Umoya Munye" (isiZulu for one spirit) sponsored by the Goethe-Institut. In this project, talented African musicians from up to four nations learn from each other in joint projects and go on concert tours in Africa and Europe.
