AWA

Bio

AWA (born Awakhiwe Sibanda) is hip hop artist from Zimbabwe who is part of an all-female music group called GRRRL.

Sibanda was raised in a high density and oldest suburb called Makokoba in Bulawayo. She grew up listening to such artists as Brenda Fassie, Mshoza and Thandiswa Mazwai. Her costumes are a reference to strong women from her Ndebele culture such as the powerful Queen Lozikeyi.

Sibanda participated at the It's bigger than Hip Hop show, a known competition among local rappers. She was part of a Bulawayo based hip hop collective called Amasoldiers and has worked with such artists as Psykotek, Christian Meyerholz of Symbiz/Kitschkrieg, Durbans Kwaito pioneer DJ Tira.

Her fast paced Ndebele lyrics chronicles the story of a teenager who seeks new perspectives and was raised in a poverty environment. She sings about issues that affect women such as domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, prostitution and poverty.

Sibanda's 2015 performance caught the attention of Georg Milz from Outhere Records who invited her in Germany for a show. Since then, she has been touring Europe. As of 2019, she was working on her debut album produced by a Ghanaian Stallion, a hip hop producer known for his work for artists such as Megaloh, Patrice and Joy Denalane.

The album will be released at the Outhere Records in February 2020 and features Wiyaala, Octopizzo, Cal_Vin, Mokoomba and the horn section of the Kwashibu Area Band.
