Sakhile

Bio

Sakhile was a South African Jazz ensemble, formed in the 1980s, the group was South African based as they were not in exile abroad, they were sharpened by the hard stone of apartheid and they delivered soul soothing to a nation under the stresses of the regime of that time, Sakhile meaning “we have built” sounded the generations lament on the harsh status quo of that time, with the group having evolved over their existence, the core founder group was always intact, Sipho Gumede, Khaya Mahlangu, Mabi Thobejane and Menyatso Mathole. The group released self titled album “Sakhile” in 1982, this was followed up in 1983 with “New Life”. In 1989 Sakhile gave us “Phambili”. After not releasing in 1990 and 1991 in 1992 they gave us “Welcome Home” and lastly “Togetherness” in 2004.
