Mugeez

Bio

Rashid Abdul Mugeez, professionally known as Mugeez, is a Ghanaian rapper, singer, and songwriter born in Bimbila in Ghana’s Northern Region. He rose to prominence as one half of the influential hip-hop and hiplife duo R2Bees (Refuse To Be Broke), which he formed in 2007 with his cousin Faisal Hakeem, popularly known as Omar Sterling. The duo became one of Ghana’s most successful contemporary music acts, blending Afrobeat, hiplife, and rap with lyrics in Twi and Ghanaian Pidgin English.

Mugeez developed his passion for music while in school, where he and Omar Sterling attended the same primary, junior, and senior secondary schools in Tema. They began by representing their school in music competitions and later gained wider attention after winning the popular radio contest Kasahare, which helped establish their reputation within the community.

R2Bees released their debut album Da Revolution in 2009, followed by Da Revolution II in 2012. Their growing impact earned them a nomination for Best International Act: Africa at the 2013 BET Awards. Over the years, the duo released a series of hit singles while Mugeez also explored solo collaborations with artists such as Criss Waddle, Mr. Eazi, DJ Breezy, and others. In 2017, he featured alongside Ed Sheeran on Fuse ODG’s “Boa Me,” expanding his reach to international audiences.

In 2019, R2Bees released their final album Site 15, featuring artists including Wizkid, Burna Boy, King Promise, and Kwesi Arthur. The project entered the top 10 of the Billboard World Albums chart, marking a major milestone for the duo. That same year, Mugeez founded his own record label, Extrial Music, to develop his solo career and support emerging artists. Through Extrial, he released singles such as “Regular” featuring Sarkodie and “Your Number” with Juls and King Promise, and signed Ghanaian artist Tecknikal as the label’s first act.

After launching Extrial Music, Mugeez continued expanding his solo catalogue, collaborating with DJ Mic Smith and Kwesi Arthur on “Dripping,” and releasing solo tracks such as “Chihuahua” in 2020, followed by “Six In Da Morning.” His sound balances melodic Afrobeat sensibilities with hiplife and contemporary rap, reflecting both Ghanaian tradition and global influence.

Throughout his career with R2Bees and as a solo artist, Mugeez has received numerous awards and nominations, including wins at the Ghana Music Awards for Artist of the Year, Group of the Year, Hiplife/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year, as well as a BET Awards nomination for Best International Act: Africa.

Mugeez’s legacy lies in shaping modern Ghanaian Afro-fusion, bridging street culture, melody, and international collaboration while helping position Ghanaian music on the global stage.
