Bio

Ali Farka Touré (1939-2006) was a legendary Malian singer and guitarist, hailed as the "father of African desert blues," known for blending traditional music with American blues, creating a hypnotic, globally recognized sound. Born in Mali, he was a farmer and community figure who used his fame to improve his hometown, Niafunké, even serving as its mayor, and became an influential musical ambassador, winning Grammy Awards and collaborating with artists like Ry Cooder. 

Early Life & Influences

Birth & Name: Born Ali Ibrahim Touré in Kanau, near Timbuktu, Mali, he received the nickname "Farka" (meaning "donkey") for his stubborn determination, as his parents had lost many children before him.

Musical Beginnings: From a noble background, his family initially disapproved, but he was drawn to traditional instruments like the njerkle and ngoni, becoming fascinated with river spirits.

Discovery of Blues: In 1968, a trip to Bulgaria exposed him to American blues artists like John Lee Hooker, whose music resonated with his own traditions. 

Career & Style

"Desert Blues" Pioneer: Touré pioneered the "desert blues" sound, a unique fusion of Malian folk, Songhay, Fula, and Tuareg traditions with the American blues, often singing in local languages.

Radio & Recordings: He worked for National Radio Mali in the 1970s, broadcasting his music, and later secured an international record deal with World Circuit, bringing him global acclaim.

Key Collaborations: His partnership with American guitarist Ry Cooder on Talking Timbuktu (1994) became a landmark album, as did his work with kora player Toumani Diabaté. 

Legacy & Later Life

Community Leader: More than a musician, Touré remained devoted to his home, investing in Niafunké's infrastructure and becoming its mayor, providing electricity and roads.

Awards: He won multiple Grammy Awards and was recognized as a significant cultural figure, bridging African and Western music.

Death: Ali Farka Touré died from bone cancer in 2006, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and inspiring future generations, including his son, Vieux Farka Touré.
