Goldmax
Bio
GoldMax is a South African gqom artist, dancer and performer best known as one half of Distruction Boyz. He grows up in KwaMashu, Durban, where township dance, local DJs and street culture shape the sound and identity he later becomes known for. From a young age he shows a strong interest in movement and rhythm, taking part in dance crews and community events that help him develop both confidence and artistic direction.
He and long-time collaborator Thobani “Que” Mgobhozi form Distruction Boyz, a duo that becomes central to the rise of Durban gqom. The pair gain national attention through their raw beats, energetic performances and the breakout success of their debut album Gqom Is The Future. Their music captures the spirit of Durban’s youth culture and spreads rapidly across South Africa, turning the duo into household names.
GoldMax becomes known not only for production but also for his presence on stage. His performances often combine dance, crowd interaction and a charismatic sense of movement, making him one of the most recognisable figures in the gqom scene. As part of Distruction Boyz he contributes to shaping hits that influence club culture and set a new standard for township-driven electronic music.
He later develops a solo identity while continuing to collaborate with established and emerging artists. His solo work reflects a combination of gqom, house, sgubhu and dance elements, often placing strong focus on rhythm, groove and the physical energy of performance. Through production and live shows he maintains close ties to Durban’s creative community.
GoldMax remains an active contributor to the evolution of gqom. His work in both group and solo form continues to influence new producers and dancers who look to Durban for inspiration, and he holds a respected place among artists who helped take gqom from local parties to national and international stages.
