The Music Arena Company

Bio

The Music Arena Company is the holding company for Gallo Music, Africa's oldest surviving recording company, which was founded in 1926 by Eric Gallo. Beginning as a small record label in Johannesburg, Gallo grew into one of the most influential forces in South African music, with its rooster logo becoming synonymous with the evolution of the country's soundscape. Over the decades, Gallo Music worked with some of South Africa's most celebrated artists, including Solomon Linda, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Lucky Dube, building a catalogue that spans jazz, marabi, mbaqanga, maskandi, reggae, gospel, pop, house, and kwaito. These genres shaped South Africa's cultural identity and resonated internationally, with Gallo's recordings receiving Grammy, MTV, MOBO, and numerous South African awards.

The Music Arena Company operates as more than just a record label, functioning as a comprehensive music business entity. Through Gallo Record Company, it maintains South Africa's largest and oldest independent music label, having worked with multi-platinum artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mango Groove, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, and Stimela. The company also operates Gallo Music Publishers, offering comprehensive publishing administration services including collection and reporting, positioning itself as a key player in music rights management across Africa. The company's reach extends both locally and globally through partnerships with international collaborators, positioning itself to elevate African sounds on the world stage.

The company has evolved through various corporate structures and ownership changes over the years. It became part of the broader Arena Holdings group, which was formed in 2019 when Lebashe Investment Group acquired publishing, broadcasting, and content assets for R1.05 billion. This corporate structure includes diverse media properties beyond music, though The Music Arena Company maintains its distinct identity focused on music production, publishing, and artist development. The company has adapted to the changing music industry landscape while preserving its core mission of supporting African artists and music.

Under CEO Antos Stella, The Music Arena Company is preparing to celebrate Gallo Music's 100th anniversary in 2026 with a series of commemorative events. The centenary represents both a moment of reflection on a century-long contribution to South Africa's music industry and a commitment to the future. With nearly a century of experience navigating South Africa's complex political and cultural landscape, The Music Arena Company continues to play a vital role in developing talent, preserving musical heritage, and amplifying African sounds globally. The company's legacy includes documenting and commercialising genres that might otherwise have been lost, while its ongoing work focuses on harnessing strategic partnerships to elevate African music in the global marketplace.
