Sello “Chicco” Twala
Bio
Sello Chicco Twala (born 5 June 1963) is a South African singer, songwriter and record producer. He is best known for producing a string of hits in the 1980s and 1990s and for his collaborations with artists such as Brenda Fassie and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
Early life
Twala was born in Soweto, Johannesburg, and attended Bopasenatla Secondary School. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in music, later joining several local soul and funk bands.
Career
Twala began his music career in the 1970s as a member of groups including Umoja and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse’s band, Harari. He later formed his own group, Image, before launching a solo career in the 1980s.
His breakthrough came with the release of ‘We Miss You Manelo’ in 1987, which went triple platinum, cementing his place as one of South Africa’s most successful pop producers. Twala went on to produce and co-write several hit songs for Brenda Fassie, including ‘Too Late for Mama’ (1989) and ‘Black President’ (1990).
In 1992 he released the peace anthem 'Peace Song', followed by ‘Papa Stop the War’ in collaboration with poet Mzwakhe Mbuli. He continued to produce and mentor emerging artists through his Soweto studio. In 1997, he produced Fassie’s chart-topping comeback album Memeza, one of the best-selling albums in South African music history.
Twala’s influence extends to film and television. His track ‘Modjadji’ was featured on the soundtrack for the film Grimsby (2016).
He has received numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards and recognition at the Metro FM Music Awards for his contribution to the country’s music industry.
Personal life
Twala is the son of Elias Twala and Betty Khombo Masitha. He was married to Thembi, and has four children: Longwe, Nowie, Sello and Lamiez.
