JATHB is an independent Tunisian duo formed by Mariem Hamrouni and Mohamed Barsaoui, blending Sufi trance, ancestral North African traditions, and contemporary electronic music.
Born from a powerful and almost cosmic encounter between two distinct artistic worlds, JATHB merges a deeply expressive and spiritual voice with immersive electronic soundscapes, creating a unique and evolving sonic identity. Their work explores the intersection of ritual, tradition, and modernity, rooted in Tunisian cultural heritage while speaking a universal language.
Singing in Tunisian dialect (derja), the duo draws from oral traditions, Sufi poetry, and mystical narratives to revive and reinterpret cultural memory for contemporary audiences. Their sound combines sacred vocals, organic percussion, sound design, and modular synthesis, resulting in an aesthetic that is both intimate and expansive.
Their live performance WILLIA (meaning “saints” in Tunisian dialect) is a powerful immersive experience positioned at the crossroads of world music, spiritual performance, and experimental live sets. Designed as a contemporary ritual, it bridges ancient trance traditions with modern sound design, creating a distinctive “Cyber Sufi” identity.
On stage, Mariem Hamrouni carries the vocal and spiritual dimension, while Mohamed Barsaoui builds rich, evolving soundscapes using modular synths alongside traditional instruments such as bendir, handpan, harmonium, and Tibetan bowls. Together, they create a deeply engaging collective experience that resonates with audiences seeking both depth and intensity.
As independent and self-managed artists, JATHB remains open to flexible collaboration formats, adapting easily to different festival contexts and production scales. In addition to performances, they also offer workshops and immersive experiences around voice, trance, and ancestral sound practices.
Recent highlights include Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), Kayan Festival (Abu Dhabi), International Festival of Hammamet (Tunisia), Carthage Music Days (JMC), Arabesques Festival (France), and Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt).
