Zim: Frya announces new album
South Africa-based Zimbabwean singer Frya will release her 11-track debut album Balance on 21 January.
The announcement follows the release of her single ‘B.D.E’ which is available for streaming and download on various digital platforms. The song is off the Balance project. Other tracks featured on the album include ‘Changes’, ‘For You’ and ‘Fall on Me’.
Some of the album’s songs including ‘Chandelier’, ‘Back it Up’, ‘Calculate’ and ‘Changes’ were featured as soundtracks on the Netflix film series Blood & Water.
“I feel extremely blessed about the Blood & Water placements and having had the opportunity to do the soundtrack which is a key piece of a show's identity,” Frya said. “To have a huge machine-like Netflix and the Blood & Water production team believe in my sound and vision by placing nearly half of my debut album in this incredible show with amazing African talent, is so surreal. I am still in the beginning of my career; such milestones make the journey that much more amazing.”
Commenting on ‘B.D.E’, Frya said: “B.D.E is a song I created for myself and other women to feel empowered about what they want and to be bold enough to say it. I want the song to be a powerful statement for everyone who hears it. I want it to be a record people play when they need to feel empowered, when they’re about to shoot their shot.”
She added: “I just want people to feel free to be fully themselves and I hope this record helps them with that. Working on this record with Mr Kamera was so much fun. He's such an incredible producer, he gets my voice and knows exactly how to capture that African sound and fuse it with dancehall.”
