Uganda: Young musicians complete mentorship programme
More than 15 young Ugandan artists have completed a seven-month mentorship programme organised by CMH LIVE, a musician collective and artist development company based in the capital Kampala.
The mentorship programme, which began in 2021 under the Academy Musician Fellowship initiative, provides aspiring young artists with the tools and guidance needed to grow professionally in the music industry. This year, the programme saw the participation of over 20 artists, who attended weekly masterclasses, workshops, rehearsals, and monthly showcases over the past seven months.
Speaking during a showcase event to mark the end of the programme at the Media Hub in Kampala on 22 September, CMH LIVE programme coordinator and team lead Collin Sserunjogi emphasised the importance of building a supportive artistic community where musicians can uplift one another.
“We’ve seen tremendous growth from all the participating artists throughout the seven months, not just in their music but in their overall approach to professionalism in the industry,” Sserunjogi said.
The final showcase was attended by industry leaders, music professionals, fellow artists, fans, and family members of the participants, providing a networking opportunity for the young talents. It featured standout performances from artists in the graduating class such as Lily Ahabwe, Kasereka, Jerome the Storyteller, Sandra K (The Busoga Princess), Charmic Ssentongo, Haile, and Shawn Otim, who captivated the audience with their original music and dynamic performances.
The Academy Musician Fellowship programme is free of charge and opens its doors to 20 to 25 young artists each year. Artists are encouraged to apply at the start of the year to secure a spot in the programme, which offers hands-on experience, career development resources, and a chance to perform live.
CMH LIVE is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists through structured mentorship, creative collaborations, and professional development programmes. Its mission is to empower emerging artists by providing access to industry knowledge, performance opportunities, and a supportive network of fellow musicians.
