Spotify introduces Supergroup feature
Spotify has introduced a new feature called Supergroup that generates playlists of music played by fantasy bands assembled by users.
Using the feature, which is only available on mobile, users will be able to pick their favourite artists, assemble a dream band and assign each artist a role, such as frontman, vocalist, bassist, and so on. Spotify can also spice things up by creating a randomised band based on the users listening habits.
With the Supergroup formed and assigned a “cool” moniker, Spotify will create a personalised playlist featuring music from the band, which users can share with friends and followers on social media using a custom card.
Spotify believes the feature will inject some excitement into users’ listening experience given that many of their favourite artists come from different genres.
Another Spotify tool, Icebergify, is also proving to be a hit online. The analyser tool allows users to rank the popularity of their favourite artists in an iceberg-styled chart. The tool collects data on your top 50 artists in the short term (one month), medium term (half year), and long term (several years), and then ranks them by popularity into their corresponding iceberg level.
Meanwhile, Spotify CEO Daniel EK has said podcasts are the platform’s golden goose, calling them a $20bn opportunity after they raked in $215m in revenue last year. Ek added that the platform is looking to become the biggest player dominating the audiobook space, which he called an “annual opportunity of $70bn dollars”.
