Sierra Leonean group to receive music training
A seven-man team from Sierra Leonean music school Ballanta Academy is currently in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the second edition of the East African Global Music Campus.
The event, which is supported by the European Union and Goethe-Institut, hosts the group as they prepare a professional training programme for young artists.
“Ultimately,” said the programme’s artistic director Will Ramsay, “the programme will allow all the institutions participating to develop their own professional music education programmes focused on their own musical culture and equip them with the skills to transcribe and transform their rich music traditions into modern teaching materials for the benefit of the society at large.”
Both the Goethe-Institut and the European Union are new sponsors. In 2016, funding was provided by Freetown Nominees. The training sessions consisted of body percussion, rhythmic reading and writing, harmony and keyboard harmony.
Other participants at the programme include artists from Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and South Sudan. All attendees will acquire techniques on using a new music education system, based on African music, for teaching music professionally.
