SA: Top acts billed for Mzansi Fela Festival
The 2017 edition of the Mzansi Fela Festival will be held at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria from 1 to 23 December. The event, which is now in its 10th year, will feature music, theatre, dance, comedy and poetry.
Thandiswa Mazwai, music couple Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu are expected to headline the event. Mazwai, Semenya and Mbulu will perform on 8 and 17 December, respectively. The organisers said they were still finalising the event and that other artists would be announced in due course.
“We are working with the City of Tshwane to finalise the programme," event organiser Thakgatso Setseta told Music In Africa. "There is a community outreach programme that will outsource upcoming artists who will perform at the festival."
Designed to celebrate South Africa's artistic spirit, Mzansi Fela Festival will kick start with Isambulo Musical – a gospel production that displays the African culture of worship within a typical Sunday church service. In addition, Isambulo embraces the fusion of traditional and contemporary hymns composed by authors passionate about worship.
The festival started as a five-day event and has grown to a 20-day event that attracts more than 10 000 people every year. It has become one of the premier festivals on the South African arts calendar and features local and foreign artists.
“Since its inception in December 2007, Mzansi Fela Festival has become one of the most anticipated festivals of the year in the Tshwane metro. It presents the most exciting music, theatre, dance, comedy and poetry in South Africa,” the organisers said.
Tickets for Mzansi Fela are available via Computicket as well as in Shoprite and Checkers stores. For more information about the festival, click here.
