Kenyan online tool Usanii wants to bolster artist revenues
A new artist tipping platform aiming to change how Kenyan music creatives make money is slowly gaining traction.

Launched in the capital Nairobi on 19 January, Usanii aims to widen the revenue streams available to artists. “Usanii provides Kenyan artists with tools to monetise their creativity by providing them with the freedom to follow their passions, share their stories and preserve them,” Usanii founder Sam Achola said.
The platform’s standout tool enables fans to tip their favourite artists, with funds going directly to their e-wallets.
“Whether you are a DJ, a live performer, vlogger, producer or even a podcast host, this is possible through a few simple actions: we let them create the art they love, we provide an online and offline community for them to connect with fans, and we enable them to earn a living from it,” Achola said.
“We believe that artists are the lifeblood of every country’s culture, yet here in Kenya there are many talented artists who are missing out on earning money from their work. Usanii is the place for creative individuals to access an avenue to earn a living doing what they love.”
Since its launch, the platform has attracted 84 artists, with the developers holding monthly music sessions to popularise it.
Achola says the tool is undergoing continuous improvements and will soon feature more functionalities. They include a booking tool that guards against unethical event organisers, an e-commerce section where artists can sell their works and merchandise, and an investment tool for long-term financial planning.
