Gambia's King Kora collaborates with Swiss act
Gambian act King Kora has collaborated with Swiss reggae act Elijah Solomon. The product of the collaboration, 'You Never Know', also features Sambou Suso.
Solomon told the media that the project came about when King Kora approached him with the concept of a song he found interesting.
“I am currently in Gambia to promote the song," said the Swiss. "I shot the video in the Gambia because of its cultural aspects; and because the involvement of Gambian artists like King Kora and Sambou Susso makes it very unique.” He added that he is hoping for more collaborations with Gambian artists in the future.
The Zurich-based act released his debut album Beweg Di in 2007, with his tracks 'Gib mer Meh' and 'Las Bliebe' receiving airplay on various radio and TV stations in his home country. The single “Sie isch wäg” became his most-viewed video with over 500 000 views on YouTube.
In 2008, Solomon was named Best European Newcomer at the European Reggae Contest in Italy. Subsequently, he toured Europe, Africa and Central America, with more than 200 concerts around the world.
He has lived in Jamaica, Senegal and Switzerland, working on the creation and production of new music. Building on the success of his debut album, Solomon released his second album Eat Ripe Fruit in 2014. The album was released in Switzerland via his One Camp record label.
In February 2016, a dub remix of the album Eat Ripe Fruit was released under the title Dub Ripe Fruit. The record's eight songs were arranged in London in collaboration with the Jamaican band Raging Fyah and Joe Ariwa. These songs are available on a two-disc deluxe version featuring both Eat Ripe Fruit and Dub Ripe Fruit.
King Kora is a 10-piece band led by Lamin Jobarteh, who has been described by the organisers of popular music event WOMEX as a "funky griot". Jobarteh plays the kora, says WOMEX, "on the edge of tradition and creation, riding on deep manding, Afrobeat and all king of grooves, singing history but also his stories".
