The film traces Akon’s journey from his early years in Senegal to international stardom, examining how his African heritage continues to influence his music, philanthropy and business ventures. It features an in-depth interview in which the artist reflects on his upbringing, family values, and ongoing commitment to Africa through initiatives such as Akon Lighting Africa and Akon City.
Serero, known for his documentaries on cultural and artistic figures, said the film focuses on Akon’s identity and purpose rather than his fame. “Akon embodies the spirit of modern Africa , proud of his roots, inspired by his heritage, and determined to build a brighter future for the next generations,” Serero said. “This film is not about fame; it’s about identity, purpose, and showing the true spirit of how Africans have sacrificed their own dreams to help others.”
Akon: From Africa to the World takes viewers across Dakar, Atlanta and New York, highlighting the artist’s cross-cultural journey and his efforts to reshape Africa’s global image. The documentary underscores Akon’s role as both a musician and humanitarian, committed to using his platform to promote innovation and sustainable development on the continent.
Akon, born Aliaune Thiam, rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with hits such as ‘Lonely’, ‘Smack That’ and ‘Don’t Matter’. Beyond his chart success, he has spearheaded large-scale development projects across Africa. His Akon Lighting Africa initiative has provided solar power to millions in rural areas, while Akon City, a proposed eco-friendly smart city in Senegal, aims to serve as a model for sustainable urban development.
Serero’s latest project adds to his growing portfolio of documentaries centred on influential public figures. His previous works include Rocancourt, The United States of Elie Tahari, and Richard Orlinski: The Art Documentary, which have been screened at major festivals and received international distribution.
