eSwatini: MTN Bushfire unveils first batch of 2023 performers
MTN Bushfire festival has unveiled the first batch of live performers for its 16th edition at House On Fire in Malkerns Valley, eSwatini, from 26 to 28 May 2023.
The organisers say the event is “rooted in Africa and yet globally inclusive,” its line-up “embracing the eccentric and unearthing the eclectic.”
Top acts including South Africa’s Sho Madjozi, French duo Ibeyi and eSwatini’s Qibho Intalektual will join dozens of artists from Africa and around the world on the various festival stages to present multiple forms of creative expression, including music, dance, theatre and spoken word.
The 2022 edition of the festival was headlined by Nigerian Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti and his Egypt 80 band. Previous artists who have performed at the MTN Bushire have included Salif Keita, Yemi Alade, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, TKZee, Matthew Mole, Jay Prayzah, Jojo Abot, Baloji, Bombino and Petite Noir.
One of South Africa’s brightest and boldest stars, Sho Madjozi is famous for her audacious energy and colourful aesthetic. Her music combines hip hop hooks with catchy gqom-rooted melodies, fusing languages, genres and fashions while paying homage to her Tsonga heritage and embellishing it with a global sensibility.
Ibeyi consists of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz. The duo sings in English, French, Spanish and Yoruba. Their set is characterised by stunning parallel harmonies and integral minimalist Latin percussion play with momentous, deeply resonant bass and electronic neo-soul.
Qibho Intalektual is a mentor, poet, musician, author, social activist and member of arts development initiative Rooted Soulz. One of the most famous artists in eSwatini, Qibho is known for his blend of witty, thought-provoking and intelligent wordplay. His signature style is deeply embedded in conscious hip hop music, reflecting honest social commentary with skilful storytelling.
Named “Top African festival” by the BBC, and lauded by CNN as one of the “Seven African music festivals you really have to see”, MTN Bushfire enjoys an attendance of more than 30 000 patrons, with attendees from more than 50 countries.
More artists will be announced in the new year, and festival, glamping and camping tickets are available on the MTN Bushfire website.
